Event: Leicester Memon Youth Association Multi-Sports Tournament
Date: November and December 2015
Location: Various Location in Leicester including Memon Centre
Valuable Event for our Memon Youth Community
Leicester Memon Youth organisation have built up on their success of the 2014 event which saw a record number of participants in the 2015 tournament (25th Anniversary) The event held in November and December was enjoyed by the community with a dazzling array of sports tournaments that included football, table tennis, darts, cricket, FIFA on PS3, table football and much more! Late night’s hard work and positive banter made it all worthwhile.
The event kicked off with FIFA and Pool tournament at the Corner Pocket on Friday 6th November for juniors who were competing to reach the final and secure a trophy. The ever popular table tennis tournament followed on Friday 13th November at the Memon Centre. Players competed against one another in this fast and demanding quick reaction game. Some spins proved too much for some players leading to the final winners, Imran Sacranie for the adults, Mohamed Jakhura under 16’s and Ahmad Gaffar for under12’s.
The Badminton tournament was held on Saturday 12th December at the Crown Hills Community College played on 8 courts, starting with under 12’s category and under 16’s followed by an adult’s doubles tournament with 64 adults participating. Pairs were picked on their ability which proved very difficult for the organisers to rate in categories considering everyone claiming either to be an expert or a complete novice.
Further events were scheduled through the month with indoor cricket been the last one held on Saturday 19th December. 42 keen batsmen took part all at different levels. This fast, furious and fun game with a high tempo kept going till late testing the player’s reactions to see which team comes out top.
Also by back popular demand a bowling tournament was organised for adults and juniors with the event organisers looking to do more whilst everyone was in the spirit of joining in. Congratulations to Asif Alimahomed beating his own highest score of 155 set in 2014. The new high score of 231 has raised the bar for the future bowlers.
To round the tournament off a presentation ceremony took place on Friday 8th January at the Memon Centre. The awards presentation was a wonderful way for the community to recognise and acknowledge the achievements and talents of our young and old participants for 2015. This was a great way to showcase the community at its brilliant best with over 637 people taking part. As with every Memon traditional custom, food was served straight after.
Shabir Jakhura vice Chair of the youth group, said: “Each year the tournament goes from strength to strength and we are delighted with how it has grown over the years. It was a team effort and feedback from event organisers and participants has been extremely positive. We are keen to hear from any individuals or groups that would like to take part in the tournament or who would like to support the event through sponsorship, engagement or in-kind contributions. We look forward to return next year”
Ashraf Okhai Chairman of the Memon Youth Association, said: “The tournament provides a real showcase for the community to get together, I would like to thank everyone who was involved within the youth programme. Events like these are great at raising awareness to maintain our culture and talent that we have in Leicester and something that we all should take great pride in. I would encourage everyone to support and enjoy them on a regular basis”.
Ashraf Added: “In future we would like all the tournament activities to take place at the new Memon Centre which is currently under construction, this facility is very important in helping us to engage with the local community and forging better links with regional and national memon organisations. The construction is in the early stages and we are currently requesting everyone for donations to bring this magnificent new centre ready for 2016 tournament.”

MEMON FESTIVAL TO SERVE UP A GREAT FEAST AND SOME FAMILY FUN!
Memon Youth Association have teamed up once again to run a ‘Memon Festival’ which is free to attend. The first one is planned for Sunday 10th May at the Ethel Road Caribbean Cricket Club. Organisers of the event will be celebrating and showcasing the amazing variety of high quality foods and sweets including entertainment for families. We are inviting local food and drink businesses, groups to get in touch if they want to be part of the Festival.
The festival plans to serve a delicious mix of foods and entertainment along with some tasty offers from local businesses. On the menu will include BBQ, Bhel Puri and for the sweet tooth Waffles, Ice Cream, Sweets and Candy Floss. There will be a few surprises along the way with much of the food been freshly cooked, sizzling and full of mouth-watering flavours and ready to eat! Are you coming?
To get the family buzzing (or not as the case may be) there will be lots of entertainment on the Bouncy Castle, face painting and mehndi. Under 12’s can get inspired by joining the 5a-side football competition and penalty shootout offering them a road to cup glory. Feeling laid back than why not grab an ice cream or BBQ then sit back on the grass verge and relax to watch a t20 cricket match between Leicester and London. It will be a neck and neck game to decide which memon team is better.
Ashraf Okhai, Chair of Youth Association said: “The ‘Memon Festival’ is all about creating a fun atmosphere in our community. We have seen how well our youth tournament works and we would like to build on its success. These events I hope will support our community for the future and especially allowing our children to experience pride to be part of our culture.
Ashraf Okhai continued: “The Memon Youth Association would like to thank all of our generous sponsors and volunteers for making this event possible and for showing their commitment in bringing our community together. Below we have listed some of our corporate sponsors, with still so many others to thank”
