25th Anniversary Memon Annual Sports Tournament 2015

Event: Leicester Memon Youth Association Multi-Sports Tournament

Date: November and December 2015

Location: Various Location in Leicester including Memon Centre

Valuable Event for our Memon Youth Community

Leicester Memon Youth organisation have built up on their success of the 2014 event which saw a record number of participants in the 2015 tournament (25th Anniversary) The event held in November and December was enjoyed by the community with a dazzling array of sports tournaments that included football, table tennis, darts, cricket, FIFA on PS3, table football and much more! Late night’s hard work and positive banter made it all worthwhile.

The event kicked off with FIFA and Pool tournament at the Corner Pocket on Friday 6th November for juniors who were competing to reach the final and secure a trophy. The ever popular table tennis tournament followed on Friday 13th November at the Memon Centre. Players competed against one another in this fast and demanding quick reaction game. Some spins proved too much for some players leading to the final winners, Imran Sacranie for the adults, Mohamed Jakhura under 16’s and Ahmad Gaffar for under12’s.

The Badminton tournament was held on Saturday 12th December at the Crown Hills Community College played on 8 courts, starting with under 12’s category and under 16’s followed by an adult’s doubles tournament with 64 adults participating. Pairs were picked on their ability which proved very difficult for the organisers to rate in categories considering everyone claiming either to be an expert or a complete novice.

Further events were scheduled through the month with indoor cricket been the last one held on Saturday 19th December. 42 keen batsmen took part all at different levels. This fast, furious and fun game with a high tempo kept going till late testing the player’s reactions to see which team comes out top.

Also by back popular demand a bowling tournament was organised for adults and juniors with the event organisers looking to do more whilst everyone was in the spirit of joining in. Congratulations to Asif Alimahomed beating his own highest score of 155 set in 2014. The new high score of 231 has raised the bar for the future bowlers.

To round the tournament off a presentation ceremony took place on Friday 8th January at the Memon Centre. The awards presentation was a wonderful way for the community to recognise and acknowledge the achievements and talents of our young and old participants for 2015. This was a great way to showcase the community at its brilliant best with over 637 people taking part. As with every Memon traditional custom, food was served straight after.

Shabir Jakhura vice Chair of the youth group, said: “Each year the tournament goes from strength to strength and we are delighted with how it has grown over the years. It was a team effort and feedback from event organisers and participants has been extremely positive. We are keen to hear from any individuals or groups that would like to take part in the tournament or who would like to support the event through sponsorship, engagement or in-kind contributions. We look forward to return next year”

Ashraf Okhai Chairman of the Memon Youth Association, said: “The tournament provides a real showcase for the community to get together, I would like to thank everyone who was involved within the youth programme. Events like these are great at raising awareness to maintain our culture and talent that we have in Leicester and something that we all should take great pride in. I would encourage everyone to support and enjoy them on a regular basis”.

Ashraf Added: “In future we would like all the tournament activities to take place at the new Memon Centre which is currently under construction, this facility is very important in helping us to engage with the local community and forging better links with regional and national memon organisations. The construction is in the early stages and we are currently requesting everyone for donations to bring this magnificent new centre ready for 2016 tournament.”

WMO Ramadaan Zakat Appeal 2015

11th June 2015– 17th Shaban1436

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Islam

Assalaam-u-Alaikum Warahamatullahi Wabarakatahu, Ramadaan Mubarak

With the holy month of Ramadhan quickly approaching, we pray to Allah SWT that he grant us all the best of health in order that we can fulfil our fasting obligation and earn the maximum rewards in this blessed month.  It is narrated that the month of Ramadhan is a gift for all mankind, this is the month where good deeds are multiplied in reward, and Allah has promised this to be a month of salvation from Hell fire and the reward of Paradise.

Like Fasting, Zakat is also another pillar of Islam. Donations in any form whether it be Zakat, Sadaqah or Lillah will be the vehicle to alleviate poverty in the Memon community worldwide.

Last Ramadhan we sent out a similar letter and approached many of you in person for your generous donations. By the grace of Almighty many of you responded positively and gave your Zakat to World Memon Organisation (WMO). Some of you promised to do so from this year. We need to ensure that every one of us gives part of our Zakat to WMO. It is our firm belief that if every member of our community worldwide provides part of their Zakat to WMO we can collectively alleviate the sufferings of the underprivileged members of our community.

We would like to remind you all of the noble work carried out by The World Memon Organisation (WMO). Over the past ten years WMO collected and redistributed over $33 million to educational, rehabilitation and relief projects around the globe, mainly concentrating on assisting Memon families in Pakistan & India.

The WMO is an international organisation serving the Memon community and humanity at large. The Europe Chapter is part of WMO and we have a commitment to raise a minimum of $400,000, towards a global target of $4.5 million. We therefore humbly request you to please dispense part of your Zakat to the WMO.

We are pleased to report that the office bearers of WMO personally visited Pakistan and India last month in order to see for themselves the work that is happening and to ensure that there is full compliance on the projects being undertaken.

Please see below some of the projects undertaken by WMO in India and Pakistan.

Education for All
Currently, around 10,000 students are benefiting from this scheme. A sum of US $ 1.2 million has been earmarked for the current year 2015-16 for Education up to Intermediate Level.

The WMO is providing financial support to needy students to pursue higher and professional education in various fields. Currently 1,048 students are receiving assistance from WMO.

WMO Rehabilitation Scheme
The WMO Rehabilitation Scheme was started in the year 2004. Over 2,000 families are receiving financial assistance for acquiring flats/houses. For the year 2015, WMO needs an amount of US $1 million for the Rehabilitation Scheme.

The Memon Industrial & Technical Institute (MITI)
MITI was inaugurated on 31st May 2009. At present, more than 18,000 students (12,000 females and 6,000 males) are being trained in over 50 different technical, vocational and I.T. courses. Since inception, a total of around 50,000 students have been trained.  MITI has been approved as a City & Guilds International Centre.

The Memon Medical Institute (MMI)
MMI was inaugurated in 2010, with the assistance of WMO. This is a 332 bed tertiary care hospital project with state-of-the-art infrastructure that is designed according to international standards. It is a not for profit set up. It is a 100% donor funded project that aims to serve people regardless of their caste, creed, color, religion or ability to pay. It has a Patients’ Welfare Program to support the needy. The hospital has a covered area of 320, 000 sq. ft. It is centrally air conditioned and designed to meet International Standards. It has 100% self power generation. Nursing School, Medical College and Research Institute are planned on 11.5 acres.

WMO Rozgar & Micro Finance Schemes
WMO has distributed under the Rozgar Scheme 58 Auto Rickshaws and 481 Sewing Machines, at a cost of US $138,812 to needy families to enable them to earn a decent livelihood. Through WMO Micro Finance Scheme, small loans are given to small entrepreneurs to help them advance their small businesses.

WMO Memon Census Project
The importance of Census of the Memon Community worldwide is much needed. This will help us to plan for healthcare, education, rehabilitation, etc. WMO in Pakistan has so far collected data of 38,560 families (170,185 individuals), which is estimated to be 25% of the total Memon population residing in Pakistan.

We would once again humbly request your support in raising these much needed funds. May Almighty Allah bestow all His Bounties & Blessings on you and reward you and your near and dear ones abundantly in this world and hereafter. We pray that the last few days of this beautiful month bring you lots of barakah and blessing, and may we be amongst the fortunate ones to have attained Allah’s pleasure in this month.

1st May 2015 Event: Memon Festival

Date: Sunday 10th May 10am – 6pm

Location: Ethel Road Caribbean Cricket Club

Memon Youth Association have teamed up once again to run a ‘Memon Festival’ which is free to attend. The first one is planned for Sunday 10th May at the Ethel Road Caribbean Cricket Club. Organisers of the event will be celebrating and showcasing the amazing variety of high quality foods and sweets including entertainment for families. We are inviting local food and drink businesses, groups to get in touch if they want to be part of the Festival.
The festival plans to serve a delicious mix of foods and entertainment along with some tasty offers from local businesses. On the menu will include BBQ, Bhel Puri and for the sweet tooth Waffles, Ice Cream, Sweets and Candy Floss. There will be a few surprises along the way with much of the food been freshly cooked, sizzling and full of mouth-watering flavours and ready to eat! Are you coming?
To get the family buzzing (or not as the case may be) there will be lots of entertainment on the Bouncy Castle, face painting and mehndi. Under 12’s can get inspired by joining the 5a-side football competition and penalty shootout offering them a road to cup glory. Feeling laid back than why not grab an ice cream or BBQ then sit back on the grass verge and relax to watch a t20 cricket match between Leicester and London. It will be a neck and neck game to decide which memon team is better.
Ashraf Okhai, Chair of Youth Association said: “The ‘Memon Festival’ is all about creating a fun atmosphere in our community. We have seen how well our youth tournament works and we would like to build on its success. These events I hope will support our community for the future and especially allowing our children to experience pride to be part of our culture.
Ashraf Okhai continued: “The Memon Youth Association would like to thank all of our generous sponsors and volunteers for making this event possible and for showing their commitment in bringing our community together. Below we have listed some of our corporate sponsors, with still so many others to thank”
